Environment and Safety (ES) Manager - Samlesbury

Role Description

Reporting to the Brewery Manager and being part of the site management team, you will be responsible for providing technical support to the site in the areas of environmental and safety related issues and to deliver departmental and site management reporting, in line with legal and company standards.

You will be responsible for the development and implementation of new ES improvement initiatives and the daily management of ongoing ES operations. You will direct and manage efforts to achieve and sustain compliance with new and existing UK ES Regulations. Your decisions will affect the safety and health of all plant employees as well as local residents in the community and the local wildlife and eco-systems.

Duties and responsibilities

Deployment of new operating practices across the site

Take responsibility for the delivery of improvement plans as identified during the daily, weekly and monthly review process
Identify, collate and report on all relevant department KPI’s as defined through the MCRS process e.g. Brewery Injury Frequency Rates, LTI, Brewery Injury Severity Rates, Hazard Reporting, % Recycling, Environmental Non-Compliances etc.
Influence key internal and external stakeholders to ensure ES performance is maximized
Management of ES plant performance

Develop ES programmes and processes aimed at improving standards and creating and maintaining a safe and environmentally responsible workplace, a favorable public image and significant annual savings
Provide direction and resources to teams across site to assist them in achieving goals i.e. Ergonomics, Contractor
Management, Compliance Audits, Regulatory Interpretations, Industry Leader Trends, etc.

Direct the establishment of annual and long-term ES excellence goals and tracking mechanisms
Effectively communicate the efforts of the Brewery in relation to ES programmes, performance and initiatives
Manage the brewery waste and co-product streams to maximize revenue and minimize costs
Manages site emergency systems and processes
Direct ES Compliance activities to assure compliance with UK, and EU Laws, as well as with corporate directives
Direct efforts to address opportunities and continuously minimize potential claims post-accident
Coordinate implementation of ES activities on site through use of ES management system
Provide recognition of site achievements in relation to ES initiatives
Management of security team in terms of contracts, processes and performance
Management of energy consumption

Take ownership for site environment permit and target setting and reporting around environment factors such as energy / water consumption etc.
Control of cost and budget

Ensure cost optimisation across all areas of the site
Contribute to implementing strategic concepts to reduce costs and increase service levels
Partner with other business functions in negotiations concerning contracts and projects related to the ES function
Share accountability for maintenance cost performance
Manage the ES budget and relevant site financial Package budget
Quality, Environment, Health and Safety and compliance to standards

Develop and promote safe working practices
Ensure compliance with all company and legal obligations
Manage appropriate SLA’s to ensure quality standards and specifications are maintained
Ensure all activities are in adherence to SLA and local governance
Contribute to continuous improvement to consumption of energy and utilities across site

Required competency and experience

·         Strong leader with good communications skills.

·         Good analytical skills to transfer data into useful information.

·         Ability to coach others to share extensive knowledge of ES Law and Management Systems.

·         Development and management of ES policies, processes and procedures.

·         Ability to communicate and article complex information into simple and clear ES strategies.

·         Ability to ensure effective management of significant change.

·         Ability to contribute excellent knowledge of manufacturing principles, tools and techniques and project management principles.

·         Ability to ensure successful delivery of process improvement initiatives.

·         Ability to act as a role model for the ten principles and to ensure that the culture within the department is aligned to the ten principles.
