Production Supervisor

Job Description

1.   Job Purpose:

Responsible for the management of the Production Unit Shift Operations teams, facilitating all aspects of production (HSSEQ, Deliver the Plan – throughputs, yields, energy efficiency etc) of the OMS My Clientsite operations. (Not including My ClientWaterfront or the Road Terminal).

Responsible for the development of Current and Emergent PTLs and Front Line Leaders

Responsible for sustaining work processes and unit performance through changes of Managers, Production Team Leaders & Process Operators

Work in conjunction with the Unit Manager and the OMS Off Site Operations Production Supervisor to develop the Medium / Long Term strategy for Production Unit


Direct reports: 5 Production Team Leaders

Responsible for Safely and efficiently “Delivering the Plan” for the handling and blending of refinery finished products except Propylene) to meet the daily run plan at minimum cost.

Responsible for storage and supply of refinery crude oil feed into the distiller unit.

The operation of effluent treatment facilities associated with My Client’s refinery outfalls within the consented limits.

Principal Accountabilities:

Accountable for the establishment of PTL and shift team performance standards

Accountable for the development of the PTL team and future Leaders via the Front Line Leader Programme, and developing succession plans in conjunction with the Ops Competency Manager

Accountable for sustaining the production work processes over time, including Operating and Emergency Response procedures using PCDM process

Accountable for ensuring the competence of Operations team

Accountable for the operations on OMS My ClientSite areas, including following up / investigating deviations:

·         HSSE (Compliance & Barriers), including adherence to ESP processes and COMAH compliance.

·         Effective and efficient operations (Compliance to daily schedule – “Delivering the Plan”, Product Quality)

·         Leading the Management of Abnormal Situations including impacted stakeholder communication

·         Process Reliability

·         Process Optimisation

·         Cost control and profitability opportunities, including FP blending on grade at minimal cost.

Responsible for managing PU Operations budget and managing team overtime within budget

Support planning of the operational aspects of major equipment shutdowns and tank outage planning. Ensure good coordination between operations/maintenance in conjunction with the Operations Maintenance Coordinator and Production Specialist Projects/ Turnaround in order to minimise plant downtime. 

Ensure the timely release of equipment for routine and statutory inspections.

Leads / Supports implementation of new initiatives.

“Change Management Support” including identification of Ops training requirements, and assessment of the operability of proposed changes to plant hardware so as to ensure the operational integrity is maintained.

Identify operational reliability improvements and participate in associated teams, using the MTA process

Ensure unit Operating instructions are issued to reflect scheduling and maintenance requirements.

Key Challenges:

OMS on My Client manages the preparation and distribution of all Refinery finished products to customers (except Propylene). Close relations with OMS off site operations, Scheduling and Marketing teams is an essential part of the role.

My Client’s Operations skillpool has a population demographic that will result in a large turnover of staff in the next 10 years.  Ensuring there are adequate, competent replacement personnel will be key to ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable unit operation going forward.

Achieving Operational excellence in all areas of HSSEQ and Margin. Blending excellence to achieve lowest cost on grade product, and management of the major refinery aqueous discharges within consent limits are key targets.

Working with the other Production Supervisors to ensure consistent application of standards across the site, and ensuring that all inter-PU activities are identified and acted upon in order to maximise the site margin.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

HNC or equivalent or other demonstrated higher levels of competency

Knowledge of refinery / manufacturing operations principles, business processes and systems, or a demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate such knowledge.

Extensive knowledge of specific PU operations is desirable but not essential         

Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills

Fire Permit Signatory or an Authorised Safety Inspector training to become a FPS

Prior experience as a PTL or a Front Line Leader position with line responsibility
