Job description

We are enjoying double digit growth in production volumes as the medical nutrition products have a strong market share. However the business is operating within a mature market but there is still scope for expansion both within local and global markets, and the emphasis in the coming years with be on maintaining volume growth, whilst ensuring we drive our cost targets in the right direction.

A permanent vacancy has arisen for an experienced Head of Quality at our site in Liverpool. The successful candidate will sit on the Plant Leadership Team and have full responsibility for the drive and delivery of Quality and Food Safety Performance of the Factory to sustainably achieve consistent Quality and uncompromising Food Safety. We are looking for candidates who have a proven track record of developing the strategic Quality and Food Safety plans in a Medical Nutrition, Pharmaceutical or Food manufacturing environment and delivering results through inspirational leadership.

Job Detail:

Key areas of accountability and responsibility:

  • Ensure consistent quality & food safety of all products delivered, through the implementation of systems, procedures and suitable controls, within the frame of the PDS
  • Member of the Plant Leadership Team contributing to Plant Strategic Plan and PDS
  • Drive & support the Site strategic plan in conjunction with Leadership Team peers
  • Develop, drive & support the strategic Quality Ambition
  • Build and steer the Plant Quality Business Plan in accordance with the business needs to continuously improve quality performance in all areas
  • Ensure appropriate Quality governance in all Plant projects and adherence to risk assessment  and other appropriate tools
  • Build the Quality capabilities of the Plant : organisation, profiles, staffing, people development
  • Define and drive the quality mind-set throughout the Supply Point
  • Overall responsibility for the Quality Control teams, Quality Assurance Teams, Quality Improvement Team and Product Qualification Team (approx. 40 people)
  • Budget & Capex control for department and active involvement in major site projects
  • Support incident & crisis Management, ensuring a suitable crisis management system is in place to facilitate incidents and crises


  • High visibility and exposure at all levels and multiple functions within the organization.
  • Opportunity to influence and support key drivers in different functional areas.

Key Attributes:         

·         Previous level 7 or 8 at last job / Previous experience of working on Senior Management team

·         Professionally experienced in a Quality Assurance role for a minimum of 8 years

·         Strong Medical Nutrition / Food / Pharmaceutical background

·         Educated to degree level in a technical subject (for example food chemistry, food technology, Biology, engineering, chemistry) or industry experienced/Professional qualifications

  • Understanding and experience in food science & technology,

·         Knowledge of Quality Systems, Manufacturing and Process knowledge

·         Knowledge from HACCP / FSSC 22.000

·         Able to communicate effectively and negotiate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including relevant authorities eg FDA

·         Proximity to all levels and functions across a broad spectrum in the Medical Division and wider business

·         Managing complexity – ability to take decisions or make recommendations while assessing the associated risks

·         An inspiring Leadership style with of leading teams on a vision as well as empowering and developing people / teams to deliver business ambition

·         Able to work under pressure on multiple priorities with set targets and time frames
