Engineering Cell Leader

Job Description

Mission of the role


Day to Day Management of Shift Engineering teams to support the maintenance of the factory running and ensure efficient services to the Production areas.

To install, repair, inspect, calibrate and overhaul plant / machinery both mechanically and electrically to ensure continuous production and continuous improvements within the plant and facilities in compliance with health and safety, GMP and best-practice guidelines and procedures to ensure right first time processing of manufactured products.

To maintain, improve and sustain the overall equipment efficiency of the area under their responsibility in compliance with health and safety, GMP and best-practice guidelines.  The role should be the main catalyst for continuous improvement philosophy in the site.

To provide cover for the Maintenance Manager during his time away from the business and during the shift


Main Responsibilities & KPI’s

Management and enable the Engineering teams to:


  • Ensure Company safety policy, rules and procedures are understood and followed on all tasks and improvements
  • Identify and report health or safety hazards & dangerous situations and put appropriate control measures in place
  • Take part in regular inspections/audits for and machine safety and ensure agreed actions are completed


  • Ensure equipment is able to manufacture products in accordance with quality procedures and standards to achieve the product quality targets at minimal waste levels (inc change-over’s).
  • Ensure that critical control points are identified on the equipment and that they are able to be  inspected according to QM procedures
  • Maintain equipment technical documentation, updating with all improvements or modifications made
  • (Short interval meeting) SIM 1, 2, 3, 4 production – SIM 2 engineering – losses meeting/PPM meeting
  • Audit support
  • Communication to all site key stake holder
  • Managing training matrices for both production and facilities


  • Ensure that equipment is generating minimum waste/give away
  • Ensure that the CBU operates to the agreed budget
  • Ensure improvements are cost effective before implementation
  • Weekly budget control


  • Progress on small projects and satisfactory completion against project plans.
  • Ensure standards are clearly defined and followed in your area with defined audit schedule and implementation of the improvement actions
  • Carry out time studies to reduce loss time (minor stops)
  • Predictive maintenance – condition/thermal/lubrication/oil analysis
  • Manage PPM and workload
  • Managing training matrices for both production and facilities equipment
  • BDA – tags – MTTF – PPM ownership
  • Managing training matrices for both production and facilities
  • Support EHS - PDR – IDP – T/A
  • Support AM program
  • Day to day planning of people and workload
  • Support, interact with project team and SSO team

  • Close skills gaps identified by the skills matrix through proactive planning with Leader
  • Support excellent internal communications between all teams via logbooks, activity boards, handovers and coaching

Autonomous Maintenance

  • Support the AM activities (eg tagging, lubricating, deep cleaning, generating OPLs, cell meetings, step audits, board updating, elimination of contamination sources and elimination of hard to access areas)
  • Transfer technical knowledge to technical operators in line with programme
  • Be proactive on the cell/team meetings and bring relevant issues for discussion and provide suggestions for improvements

Effective Maintenance

  • Prime functions include routine PPM via CMMs, fault diagnosis, calibration, and modifications to optimise plant efficiency.
  • Ensure breakdown analysis for all component failures are carried out and the implementation of countermeasures to eliminate root causes
  • Look to reduce frequency and time of PM schedules through improvements or loss reduction

Focused Improvement

  • Ensure the losses are being recorded and classified accurately
  • Regularly monitor and analyse unit loss trees to identify loss pattern and take action to eliminate gap
  • Ensure improvements are being documented appropriately
  • Maintenance of facilities as required
  • Manage  team holidays, people coverage due to sickness, absenteeism and other reasons


Achievements in 1-3 years

  • To have ownership of all areas of the Liverpool site
  • To have A CLOSE/STRONG working relationship with Shift Managers, Cell leaders and all key personnel across site


Critical path, key challenges, limitations

  • Improving internal customer services and managing stakeholders expectations and relationships
  • Developing a partnership approach to integrate manufacturing and engineering
  • Improving site engineering standards to align to group and external benchmarks
  • Improving life expectancy of equipment under cost reduction pressures

Education & Professional Experiences needed

  •  Advanced Apprenticeship ideally in electro and/or mechanical engineering
  • Leadership training and good people management
  • Types of jobs: Engineering / maintenance in FMCG, food and beverage
  • Time-served and qualified to a minimum of C&G/HNC level in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with significant experience in a similar Maintenance and Engineering roles.
  • Knowledge and experience of TPM as part of professional career is essential
