You may be reluctant to write your cover letter and be unsure on where to start.  Using our vast experience, screening cover letters over the years, we share 3 top tips on how to write the perfect cover letter.

Your cover letter needs to be worded well; it is your opportunity to highlight your skills to the recruiter.  A cover letter should inspire and motivate the reader to take a 2nd look at your application.

Your letter of induction needs to emphasize what makes your application well suited or unique.

TIP 1 - Clearly include any unique reference number for the role you are applying to in the header, if this is listed in the job vacancy.  This will help the recruiter allocate your application to the correct job as they are likely to be working on multiple roles.

TIP 2 - Write a strong opening paragraph. In the first paragraph of your letter, mention the job title for which you’re applying and where you saw the position posting.

TIP 3 - Follow with a second paragraph where you give a brief overview of your background as is relevant to the position.  Highlighted experiences which make you the best fit for the job.

Keep it concise, bullet points work well as the recruiter may have over 200 applicants to screen.

It is worth the time you invest in making your cover letter as clear, concise and exciting as possible.  You get one chance to make a good impression.
