The Green Jobs Boom: How the UK’s Clean Energy Push is Reshaping Careers in 2025

By Antal International
18-06-2025

The UK is in the middle of a clean energy revolution, and it's not just good for the planet, it's transforming the job market. As wind turbines rise along the coast and solar panels cover retired coal sites, a new wave of employment is taking shape. These "green jobs" are booming, offering real career opportunities for engineers, electricians, project managers, and more.

A £1 Billion Boost to Offshore Wind

In a recent announcement, Ed Miliband pledged £1 billion to scale the UK’s offshore wind supply chain. The plan will support projects in regions like Teesside, Scotland, South Wales, and East Anglia—areas historically impacted by industrial decline. Backed by the Crown Estate and industry partners, this initiative is expected to create thousands of new roles.

According to RenewableUK, the wind energy sector currently employs around 55,000 people. With offshore capacity expected to quadruple by 2030, the industry could support over 112,000 jobs in the next five years.

A Growing Skills Gap

However, this rapid growth isn’t without challenges. Skilled workers are in short supply.

  • The industry relies heavily on overseas talent, but new UK immigration rules are making it harder for foreign specialists to stay or join.

  • Apprenticeship numbers are growing, but not fast enough to keep up with demand.

  • Roles in welding, electrical engineering, and wind turbine maintenance are especially difficult to fill.

Without urgent investment in skills and training, the UK risks falling behind its net-zero goals.

Green Training is Underway

To meet demand, training programs are expanding across the country. From Aberdeen to Pembrokeshire, colleges and employers are rolling out clean energy apprenticeships, technician bootcamps, and reskilling pathways for oil and gas workers.

British Gas is planning to launch 400 new apprenticeships by 2030. The National Grid, SSE, and Crown Estate are also backing new education and recruitment programs, especially for young professionals and mid-career changers.

The Numbers Tell the Story

  • Green job ads rose by 9% in 2024, despite a 22% drop in total job listings across the UK.

  • Construction, energy, engineering, and professional services are all hiring for sustainability roles.

  • Offshore wind alone could add over 43,000 jobs by 2026, supported by more than £60 billion in private investment.

This isn’t just a trend; it’s a structural shift.

What This Means for You

Whether you're a job seeker, hiring manager, or policymaker, the green economy is something you can't afford to ignore.

Who

 Why it Matters

Job Seekers   A future-proof career in a booming sector.
Employers   Now’s the time to invest in training and talent pipelines.
Communities   Regeneration of post-industrial regions.
Policymakers   Balancing immigration, education, and industry to hit net-zero goals.

Final Thoughts

The UK's path to net-zero isn’t just about cutting emissions—it's about creating jobs, revitalising industries, and rethinking how we power our lives. Green jobs aren’t coming; they’re already here. The challenge now is to make sure the workforce is ready to meet them.
