Candidate Advice

What about the “gaps” in your CV?

By Vlasta Carevic

Working with candidates, I often notice attempts to mask career breaks, unfinished studies, or periods without employment, as well as the discomfort and fear of being judged.

But that very discomfort creates the opposite effect – an impression of insecurity that usually has nothing to do with actual competencies.

The truth is very simple: honesty and openness are always the best choice.

Career breaks are normal!

Personal reasons, family care, health challenges, moving, learning, burnout, shifting priorities…

The reasons differ, but all are valid. Sometimes we all need a pause to reset and move forward stronger, more focused, and more motivated. And even when the break was unwanted – that’s still okay.

Many top professionals have gone through phases in which they waited for the right opportunity rather than accepting the first offer. That’s strength, not weakness!

So what’s the best approach?

  •  Be honest in your CV

A short, clear note explaining the circumstances is more than enough.

  • Speak openly and confidently during the interview

Employers want to understand how you think.

  •  If you can, use the break constructively

Invest part of that time in acquiring new knowledge and skills. Today, there are numerous free and affordable online learning options.

Employers see in all this motivation, proactiveness, consistency, and mindset. These are

also indicators of how you’ll handle future work challenges, unexpected situations, and possible mistakes.

And most importantly: believe in yourself!

The way you see your career break is exactly how others will perceive it.

When you accept it as part of your development, it stops being a “minus” and becomes an experience that shaped you.
