This position entails supervising the functionality of all vessel equipment, maintaining accurate operational logs, and ensuring timely maintenance and repairs. Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer and the Captain, the 1st Assistant Engineer plays a pivotal role in both routine journeys and emergency situations. This position is vital for maintaining safety standards aboard and is part of a union represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA).
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor engine room operations, log temperature and pressure readings.
- Report any machinery abnormalities to the Chief Engineer.
- Manage lifeboats or rafts in case of an emergency.
- Perform essential maintenance tasks including bilge pumping, and managing fuel, water, and lubricant levels.
- Assist with mechanical and electrical repairs.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the engine room and perform night engineer duties.
Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Minimum age of 21 years.
- High School Diploma or equivalent education.
Certifications:
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard (U.S.C.G.) 1st Assistant Engineer's license for vessels with 4,000 HP, Motor (Limited), or
- U.S.C.G. 2nd Assistant Engineer's license with at least 300 days sea service, or
- U.S.C.G. 3rd Assistant Engineer's license with at least 660 days sea service, and the ability to obtain a Chief Engineer’s license within 120 days for vessels 4,000 HP, Motor (Limited).
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and a valid driver's license are required.
