Role Purpose
The job holder is accountable for the risk management operations of the company, to include the integration of risk concepts into strategic planning, and risk identification and mitigation activities.

- To lead the Bank’s entire risk management framework, including reputational, operational market risk

Operational Effectiveness/Control

- To continue to review and devise policies to manage risk across organisation
- To ensure the Bank’s policies and procedure manuals are regularly reviewed in matters related to risk management
- To participate in relevant committees at Bank and Board level as required; ensuring an element of good governance as well as independence
- To ensure robust monitoring, management and reporting on the asset book, addressing concerns related to the quality and performance of same
- To work across functions for the ongoing development to market, liquidity and interest rate risk policies, limits and standards related to ALCO and other related areas
- To ensure the robust monitoring and assessment of counterparty and country risk profiles, that reflect the risk appetite agreed by the Board
- To demonstrate proactive involvement relevant decision making processes
Major Challenges
The major challenge is to produce opinions and recommendations on matters that add value to the operating business units and therefore the Group. The position requires the job holder to be creative and focused on problem solving by proper analysis of causes giving rise to identified conditions, understanding the particular features of the operating environments and having an overall knowledge of the varied business operations of the Group in order to carry out risk assignments. The position also requires the person to have a good knowledge on the laws to manage risks.
Role Context
The Chief Risk Officer will help in creating a positive working environment where employees will be engaged by being approachable and positive and provide continuous feedback to promote improvement and reward high performers accordingly.
Management & Leadership of Regulatory and Operational Risk
Strong board and senior management leadership is indispensable to ensure the bank’s processes are robust and ensure there are adequate risk mitigating measures to avoid operational risk.
The Chief Risk Officer also has the responsibility to sign and approve the Operational Loss excel sheet and report to the Operational Risk Coordinator all Operational risk loss events that result in a clear and quantifiable financial loss and have an impact on the Profit and Loss Account (including an external cost or the raising of a provision) and near misses that may be quantifiable, as soon as these happen.Observation of Internal Controls
The Chief Risk Officer will provide advisory support to the Bank services with regard to operational risk management and internal controls.
Knowledge, Experience / Qualifications and Competencies
- A First Degree in a relevant discipline, with a Postgraduate (Masters) qualification considered an added advantage.
- Over 10 years of hands-on experience in Risk Management within the Banking and Financial Institutions sector.
