Our client is a pan-European think tank and policy not-for-profit organisation, currently looking to hire a Head of Accounting in Bulgaria.
We are seeking an experienced accounting professional to manage end‑to‑end finance operations for group of European non-profit entities. The role covers daily accounting, monthly and annual close, management reporting, consolidated accounts, audits, and cash management. The successful candidate will strengthen financial systems, processes, and internal controls, ensure full statutory compliance, and lead a small team. The position requires strong technical accounting expertise, a hands‑on mindset, excellent analytical skills, and confident communication with external partners.
Thе role requires regular travel and willingness to work outside of standard business hours when necessary, including weekends or evenings.
Main responsibilities:
- Manage and handle all day-to-day accounting matters and ledgers for group of European entities
- On a monthly basis close the books and prepare the management reporting package
- Prepare single and consolidated annual accounts and manage financial audits
- Manage payments and support cash management
- Maintain and operate the accounting system
- Own and improve financial processes and policies including the internal control system
- Ensure statutory and regulatory compliance
- Develop good working relationships with tax advisors, auditors and banks
- Manage and develop team members
- Additional reasonably responsibilities assigned as needed to support overall organisational priorities
Desired experience, skills, and qualifications:
- University degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, Economics or other relevant fields
- Several years relevant hands-on accounting experience in a small to medium sized international environment
- Very good knowledge of IFRS
- Experience of digitalisation in financial systems and strong system and process skills
- High degree of service orientation and customer focus paired with hands-on approach
- Well organised, flexible and multitasking with the ability to adapt to a changeable conditions and demanding deadlines
- Very good numeracy and analytical skills
- Self-reliant with high degree of ownership, highly reliable and quality driven
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, Bulgarian and another European language (preferably German)
- Proficient in the use of up-to-date accounting systems as well as in MS Office
Considered an advantage:
- Knowledge of German GAAP, or UK GAAP
- Accounting experience in a not-for-profit organisation
- ACCA or other relevant qualification
