Our client is a well-established Bulgarian construction company with a strong track record delivering commercial and residential projects.
As Head of Finance, you will own the company’s financial management end-to-end. You’ll lead budgeting and rolling forecasts, deliver clear monthly reporting, ensure full statutory compliance, and develop a high-performing finance team (Chief Accountant, operational accountants, and controllers).
Main responsibilities:
- Lead the annual budget and quarterly reforecast cycles; analyse variances and present insights and recommendations to management and the Board
- Build project budgets and site-level job costing; issue timely daily/weekly progress and cost reports to enable rapid action
- Manage cash flow end-to-end (collections, payments, advances, retentions); shorten the cash conversion cycle
- Close monthly and year-end accounts; prepare and sign annual financial statements; submit VAT and all statutory reports on time
- Prepare pre-launch profitability, sensitivity, and risk analyses to support go/no-go decisions and mitigation plans
- Review client and subcontractor contracts to flag exposure (penalties, warranties, scope, schedule) and propose practical safeguards
- Lead, coach, and upskill the finance team; set clear standards and build strong collaboration
Desired experience, skills and qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience across finance/accounting/controlling, incl. 5+ years in a managerial role (Finance Manager / Head of Finance / Chief Accountant)
- Proven financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting expertise
- Strong command of finance principles, accounting standards, and relevant regulations
- Hands-on experience with project insurance, bank guarantees, and tax optimisations
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills; able to translate data into actionable recommendations
- Demonstrated leadership with a track record of developing high-performing teams
- High level of integrity, ethical standards, and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and collaborate across diverse stakeholders
- University degree in Finance, Accounting, Audit, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field
- Proficiency in MS Office, financial software and ERP systems
- Fluency in Bulgarian
Nice to have
- Experience in construction or a closely related project-based sector
- Professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA, or CFA)
- Very good written and spoken English
