Our client is a dynamic and growing insurance and reinsurance company based in Sofia, committed to providing innovative and robust risk solutions across multiple markets and focused on financial lines.
We are seeking an experienced and strategic-focused senior legal expert to build and lead the Legal Department of our client. This is a key leadership role responsible for managing all legal matters across all operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing corporate governance. The role also includes actively participating in, leading, creating, and adapting processes, including ones related to the development of new insurance products, working closely with underwriting and operational teams.
The Head of Legal will support the executive team with timely legal insights that enable sound business decisions, while ensuring that the company maintains the highest standards of regulatory discipline and operational integrity.
Main Responsibilities:
- Lead the process of creation of the Legal Department, setting up of the rules and creating respective operational procedures
- Oversee and manage all legal affairs of the company, including corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters
- Act as the primary point of contact for the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC) and other relevant regulatory bodies
- Ensure full compliance with local and international insurance laws and regulations, including playing leading role in the creation and adoption of mandatory and company-specific compliance and governance documents
- Draft, review, and negotiate high-value contracts, policy documentation, and corporate records
- Provide legal counsel to executive leadership on risk management, governance, and strategic initiatives
- Actively contribute to the creation, refinement, and governance of processes required for the development and launch of new insurance products, including regulatory alignment, policy wording, and procedural documentation
- Lead internal legal audits and support external audits or regulatory reviews
- Manage relationships with external legal advisors when necessary
- Supervise and mentor a Junior Legal Advisor and promote a strong culture of compliance
- Prepare, review, analyze and adapt collaterals related to the company’s insurance products and portfolio
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- 8–10 years of legal experience, preferably within the insurance or broader financial services sector
- Proven track record of working with regulators, particularly the Bulgarian Financial Supervision Commission (FSC)
- Deep understanding of insurance law, compliance frameworks, and corporate governance
- Ability to work independently and strategically, manage diverse internal and external stakeholders, and lead complex legal initiatives
- Proactive, self-driven mindset with strong organizational and prioritization skills
- Creative problem-solving capabilities and the ability to propose innovative, business-aligned solutions
- Capacity to quickly learn, interpret, and apply regulatory requirements across emerging and relevant EU markets
- Excellent communication skills in Bulgarian and English, both written and verbal
- Master’s degree in Law
