The Subject Matter Expert– Finance Systems is responsible for designing, owning, and continuously improving end-to-end finance-related business processes supported by SAP and associated systems. The role ensures that business processes, system configuration, data structures, and reporting logic are aligned, robust, and scalable, and that system changes support operational efficiency, compliance, and management information needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. End-to-End Business Process Ownership
- Own assigned finance-related business processes (e.g. Record-to-Report, Procure-to-Pay, Order-to-Cash, Fixed Assets, Costing, Controlling).
- Define, document, and maintain process maps, procedures, and control frameworks.
- Ensure consistent process execution across entities and systems.
2. SAP Finance Expertise & System Design
- Act as Subject Matter Expert for SAP FI/CO within implementation and run activities.
- Contribute to system design decisions to ensure processes are correctly reflected in SAP configuration.
- Validate functional designs, configuration choices, and system behavior against business requirements.
- Ensure alignment between transactional processing, controls, and reporting outcomes.
3. Technical Acumen & System Understanding
- Maintain a solid understanding of SAP Finance data structures, including:
- Core FI/CO tables (documents, line items, master data, controlling objects)
- Relationships between General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Asset Accounting, and Controlling
- Ability to:
- Read and interpret basic ABAP logic (custom reports, enhancements, user exits, BAdIs)
- Understand the impact of custom developments on data, postings, and reporting
- Review functional and technical specifications critically
- Act as an informed counterpart to IT on interfaces, integrations, data flows, and reconciliation logic.
- Coding is not required; technical comprehension and validation are expected.
4. Implementations, Enhancements & Change Management
- Participate in system implementations, rollouts, and major enhancements.
- Translate business needs into clear functional requirements.
- Support testing activities (UAT), including accounting and process scenarios.
- Ensure controlled introduction of system changes into productive environments.
5. Continuous Improvement & Optimization
- Identify and drive opportunities to optimize and standardize processes and system usage.
- Support automation initiatives and efficiency improvements.
- Balance global standards with justified local requirements.
6. Management Information & Reporting
- Cooperate in the development of management information and reporting solutions.
- Ensure data consistency and reconciliation across SAP and downstream systems.
- Support definition and maintenance of reporting logic, KPIs, and master data governance.
7. User Support & Enablement
- Train and support users in SAP and finance-related systems.
- Provide advanced support for complex process or system issues.
- Develop and maintain user documentation and guidelines.
- Promote consistent and disciplined system usage.
8. Incident Resolution & Data Quality
- Support analysis and resolution of system issues leading to incorrect postings or reporting.
- Coordinate root-cause analysis with IT and external providers.
- Ensure sustainable fixes and improvements to data quality and process reliability.
9. Governance, Controls & Compliance
- Support compliance with internal control frameworks, audit requirements, and regulatory expectations.
- Participate in governance processes related to system changes and process ownership.
- Provide subject matter expertise during internal and external audits.
Requirements:
- Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in finance-related processes, business systems, or transformation roles
- Strong experience with SAP FI/CO
- Proven involvement in system implementations, upgrades, or major enhancements
- Experience in complex, multi-entity environments
- Strong understanding of end-to-end business processes
- Solid SAP FI/CO functional knowledge
- Technical literacy in SAP data models and custom developments
- Ability to translate business requirements into system solutions
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively across business and IT teams
