PLC ENGINEER — STEEL / METAL SECTOR
Job Description PLC Engineer – Grinding Machines (Steel / Metals Automation) End Client A global engineering and automation solutions provider serving the test, measurement, and metals/industrial automation sectors Base Location New Delhi Travel Requirement Approximately 50%-70% travel to Germany & other European countries, on a rotational on/off basis, with each visit typically lasting 3–4 weeks at a stretch Client Exposure High-impact delivery projects for marquee US and European clients in the metals and industrial automation space Role Summary We are hiring on behalf of our client — a global engineering and automation solutions provider — for a PLC Engineer to join their Specialised Machine Construction team, with a sharp focus on grinding machines used in the steel and metals sector. This is a hands-on engineering and commissioning role for a candidate who can develop PLC and drive programs from the ground up, and who is comfortable taking ownership of commissioning independently — both in-house and at client sites internationally. The successful candidate will work extensively with Siemens S120 drive technology and will be based on the end client's payroll for the duration of the project. Given the nature of the role, this position involves frequent international travel — approximately 50%-70% of working time will be spent in Germany, with each visit typically lasting 3–4 weeks before returning to India. The role offers exposure to high-value, high-impact engineering projects delivered for leading US and European clients, making it an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to build deep, global commissioning experience. Key Responsibilities • Engineer and develop new PLC programs for grinding machines, based on circuit diagrams and, in many cases, existing Siemens S5 or S7 programs — frequently without a pre-existing functional description. • Create and expand PLC programs for Siemens controllers, including interfaces to higher-level and subordinate systems. • Carry out project planning and integration of fieldbus systems, including Profibus and Profinet. • Develop, test, and implement PLC controls for industrial machine construction (S7 programming), including related interface applications. • Own the software development of complex, sophisticated machines, including I/O checks and commissioning, for customers at international locations. • Carry out minor electrical wiring changes within control cabinets and on the machine itself, with accurate documentation of all changes. • Plan and commission Siemens S120 drive systems as a core part of machine delivery. • Travel to Germany (and potentially other European locations) on a recurring basis to support on-site commissioning for client projects, typically for 3–4 week stretches. Mandatory Requirements • Degree or technical qualification in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the design, development, and programming of PLC controls. • Genuine, verifiable hands-on engineering experience within the metals/steel sector — exposure to steel plants or steel-related production lines is essential. International commissioning experience in unrelated sectors (e.g. automotive, FMCG, distilleries) will not substitute for this. • Demonstrable, practical experience in PLC programming combined with Siemens S120 drive technology — this is the single most important technical differentiator for this role. Experience limited to S7-200 / S7-1200 (or equivalent) without S120 exposure will not meet the requirement. • Strong programming skills using Siemens Step7 / TIA Portal, along with working knowledge of industrial bus systems such as Profinet and Profibus. • Proven ability to develop PLC programs from scratch — this is weighted more heavily than experience in maintaining or troubleshooting existing programs. • Experience in Specialised Machine Construction, including independent commissioning of such machines, both in-house and at client sites — without reliance on a senior engineer. • A genuine engineering / programming / commissioning background. Candidates whose core experience is primarily maintenance, production, or operations management will not meet the requirement. • Consistent and verifiable employment history and technology claims — no overlapping employment dates, and no mismatched or non-existent PLC/drive model references. • Good command of written and spoken English, sufficient for direct client-site interaction across the UK and Europe. • Willingness and flexibility to travel internationally on a recurring basis (approx. 70% travel to Germany, 3–4 weeks per visit). Preferred Attributes (Nice to Have) These are valued in addition to — and never as a substitute for — the mandatory steel-sector and Siemens S120 experience above: • Prior experience working with OEMs in Specialised Machine Construction. • Ability to read and work independently from electrical schematics. • Flexible, results-oriented working style with strong conceptual thinking. • Good communication skills, with the confidence to liaise directly with client teams on-site. What This Role Offers • Direct ownership of complex, ground-up PLC and drive programming work — not a maintenance or support function. • Significant international exposure through extended on-site assignments in Germany, working alongside client engineering teams. • Involvement in high-impact, high-visibility delivery projects for leading US and European clients in the industrial automation and metals space. • A clear growth path for engineers looking to deepen their expertise in specialised machine construction and high-end drive technology (Siemens S120).
