Job Information

International Business Development Manager – North American Retail & International Markets

We are particularly interested in candidates with genuine international new-business development experience in the retail market, rather than candidates whose background is primarily existing-customer account management or inbound sales.

Location: India – Remote (working from home)
US-aligned hours: Mon/Wed/Fri, 6:30 pm – 3:30 am IST; Tue/Thu, 3:00 pm – 12:00 am IST
Employment: Full-time, self-employed; 14 days’ paid leave plus mandatory national and state holidays
Monthly salary: ₹10 to 15 LPA, depending on experience
Monthly bonus: Up to ₹30,000, subject to minimum KPIs being met

About the Company:

We are an established international manufacturer and supplier of bespoke retail packaging, including:

Plastic carrier bags
Paper carrier bags
E-commerce packaging
Bespoke retail packaging solutions

Our manufacturing facility is in Malaysia, with established commercial and warehousing operations in the UK and the United States. We supply retailers and businesses internationally and are now looking to expand our relationships with major retail organisations, particularly in the US.

The Role

This is a new-business development (hunting) role, not existing-customer account management or telesales.

The BDM will be given a defined list of predominantly North American retailers and will be responsible for identifying the relevant buying and procurement contacts, opening relationships, and creating genuine commercial opportunities. Although this is a hunting role, the BDM will also need good account management and organisational skills.

You will be expected to network within each prospective retailer, establish and maintain relationships, and navigate between the various buying teams to build a pipeline of opportunities. Even after RFQs have been received, the BDM will work with the Commercial Director to execute them in a timely manner, and will follow up to ensure we remain on the prospective retailer’s radar.

For many retailers on your list, we already know the relevant buyer or buying team; for the rest, you will identify them. You must be able to take these relationships forward professionally, maintain contact with the relevant buyers, and ultimately turn each relationship into a valuable quoting opportunity.

Who This Role Is Not For

We are specifically looking for genuine new-business hunters. We do not want candidates whose experience is predominantly in handling existing customer orders, repeat business, order execution, shipping and logistics, invoicing and documentation, or other operational work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research allocated retailers and organisations
  • Must know - Incoterms (International Commercial Terms)
  • Identify relevant buyers, category managers, procurement executives and other decision-makers
  • Prospect through email, telephone, LinkedIn and other appropriate channels
  • Build relationships with senior buyers and procurement teams
  • Secure introductory Zoom/Teams meetings for the Commercial Director
  • Understand each customer’s current packaging requirements
  • Establish product specifications, estimated volumes, purchasing requirements and buying cycles
  • Identify tenders, RFQs and other sourcing opportunities
  • Develop qualified opportunities for us to quote on
  • Assist in the RFQ process
  • Maintain long-term relationships with prospective retail buyers
  • Follow up in a disciplined and professional manner
  • Keep accurate records of prospects, conversations and opportunities

What We Provide

Prospecting tools: LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo/Apollo and a cloud-based CRM system
Full training, company presentations, product information and marketing materials
Support from our UK, US and Malaysian operations

Candidate Profile:

Our key requirement is a minimum of 3 years’ experience selling any product or service into North American or European retailers.

The candidate must have a proven track record of communicating with and navigating through various retail accounts to obtain commercial opportunities. A particularly strong candidate will be able to give examples of taking a completely cold retail prospect and turning it into a meaningful commercial opportunity.

Packaging experience is not essential, but candidates from the packaging industry are the most favourable outcome and would certainly qualify for the top end of our salary offer. However, we will consider any candidate who can demonstrate experience selling any product into North American or European retailers; this is the key.

The position is fully remote from India. Candidates must be comfortable working independently and communicating regularly with our UK team, and must be able to work the hours above to communicate effectively with US customers.

Essential Requirements:

Excellent spoken and written English
Professional telephone and video-meeting skills
Confidence dealing with senior buyers and procurement professionals
Proven outbound new-business development experience
Ability to research organisations and identify decision-makers
Experience generating their own opportunities rather than relying primarily on inbound leads
Strong cold-email and cold-calling capability
Persistence and professional follow-up
Strong commercial awareness
Good organisational and CRM discipline
Ability to work independently from home
Willingness to work the hours needed for effective communication with US-based customers
